Kamagra is a medication sold as a cheap alternative to Viagra, but unlike the latter, it poses a big threat to your health and it has unknown side effects

If you have searched the internet for information about erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments, you must have come across advertisements for purchasing online discreetly an ED medication, sold as a tablet or a flavored jelly. Is this medication safe for use? Is it ok to purchase it online? And is it legal and approved for use by the health authorities? As with any new medication, including ones for treating ED, it is advisable to find out more what is known about Kamagra so as to make an informed choice before taking it.

What is Kamagra?

Kamagra is a medication for the treatment of ED that contains Sildenafil citrate – the same active constituent as in the well-known Viagra. It is manufactured by different companies but mostly by the Indian company Ajanta Pharma, but it is unapproved for marketing and use in Israel, the USA and Europe.  In other words, this means that Kamagra did not go through the strict testing and complex approval process required for medications by the Israeli, United States and European health authorities, and thus it constitutes an illegal medication.

Kamagra is sold in different forms: colored tablets, effervescent tablets and a variety of flavored jellies. The medication is manufactured in India and is marketed directly to consumers online, without a prescription, as a cheap alternative to Viagra, Cialis and Levitra – which unlike Kamagra, are approved for use only with a valid prescription when dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.

The Israeli health authorities consider Kamagra a counterfeit medicine sold illegally in a manner that poses a risk to public health.

How Does Kamagra Work?

Allegedly, the active constituent in Kamagra, Sildenafil, inhibits the enzyme PDE5. When a man is aroused, there is increased blood flow to his penis, so that an erection can be achieved. However, in cases of erectile dysfunction, blood flow to the penis is reduced, making it harder to get an erection. The active constituent Sildenafil promotes penile blood vessels relaxation by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5. This increases the blood flow to the penis so that an erection hard enough for intercourse can be maintained.

What are the Dangers Associated with Kamagra Use?

Kamagra supposedly contains the active constituent Sildenafil. However, in practice, as the medication and its manufacturer are not subject to the regulatory requirements applicable to pharmaceuticals in Israel, the US and Europe, it is impossible to really ascertain what Kamagra actually contains: does it genuinely contain Sildenafil? If yes, is it in the correct concentration required for exerting an effective and safe effect? And are there any other substances in Kamagra that have been tested and proven safe for use? Taken together, it means that there is no regulatory scrutiny over the drug’s manufacturing process, ensuring it complies with the regulatory standards applicable in Israel, the US and Europe. Furthermore, there is no control over the quality of the tablets and no assurance that the quantity of the alleged Sildenafil is the same in all of them. In addition, no clinical studies have been conducted to support the efficacy and safety of Kamagra.

As opposed to Kamagra, authentic Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have been proved as safe and effective when taken in a tablet form and in the recommended dosages, in numerous large-scale clinical trials. They are also subject to strict regulatory control throughout the manufacturing, storage and supply process. Such strict regulatory oversight of pharmaceuticals allows the consumer to have complete confidence that the licensed medication contains exactly what is stated on the label and that it has been proven as effective and safe in the dosages stated.

The bottom line is that there is no guarantee that Kamagra even contains the claimed active constituent, and as for the other ingredients in the product, they are often unknown and might be dangerous for use.

When there is no certainty as to the ingredients of a medicine, it leaves patients open to a number of risks. The drug might contain much more of the active constituent than stated on the label, which can be very dangerous for use, or it might contain fillers and other substances not stated on the label that the user may be allergic to, or that are unfit for human consumption.

Currently, drug counterfeiting constitutes a major international issue, and it’s a known fact that unlicensed ED medications sold online (like Kamagra) are some of the most frequently counterfeited in the world. In one research it has been found that as much as 90% (!) of the medications sold online may be counterfeit and might likewise contain dangerous substances such as metals and other drugs including amphetamines, contaminants like toxic commercial paint and printer ink. In numerous instances, in order to save money, counterfeit drug manufacturers insert low quality, potentially dangerous ingredients to medications. Even the dosages mismatch the information on the label, and when investigators analyzed PDE5 ED medications (like Viagra) bought online, they found that barely 10% of the sampled medications were within 10% of the dosage listed on the label.
