Many couples choose to enrich their sex life by watching pornography, and the question is: could this pose a problem?
While pornography in itself is not necessarily a bad or damaging thing, it has the potential to cause problems with sexual function, particularly when the habit becomes too frequent. Studies have found that there is a connection between the need for high doses of pornography amongst men of different ages (and occasionally to the point of passing up on sexual intercourse) and the development of erectile dysfunction. For example, it has been found that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction is at its lowest (22%) amongst men who reported that they preferred sexual contact (touch) without pornography. This is in comparison with men who preferred sexual contact combined with pornography, where erectile dysfunction was estimated at 31%, and those who preferred to masturbate with pornography, where the rate of erectile dysfunction was at its highest – 79%.
Why does this happen? In several cases, the loss of the ability to get an erection is connected to the loss of the ability to enjoy “real” sexual intercourse, as they do not have the same excitation obtained when watching pornography. Occasionally, men who use a large amount of pornography develop a habit for a certain stimulation and some of them even create an addiction behavior to pornographic content and virtual sex, which can damage their ability to fantasize and cause damage to sexual function.
